Who Told You That? Confronting Imposter Syndrome as a Woman of Faith

Have you ever walked into a room, looked around at the titles, degrees, or confidence of others, and quietly wondered, “Do I really belong here?”

You’re not alone.

That feeling has a name: Imposter Syndrome.

And it’s not just a mindset. It’s a spiritual battleground.

As women of faith, many of us are high-achieving, deeply driven, and deeply committed – to our families, careers, churches, and purpose. But somewhere along the way, we start believing the lie that we’re not “enough” to be where God has placed us.

Let me remind you today: You are not an imposter in a room God opened for you.

What Is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter Syndrome is that nagging belief that your success isn’t earned, that you're just “lucky,” or that someone’s going to “find you out.” It shows up as:

  • Downplaying your achievements
  • Avoiding opportunities because you don’t feel “ready”
  • Constantly comparing yourself to others
  • Feeling like you must prove yourself – over and over again

Sound familiar? Then keep reading. Because God has something to say about it.

What Does God Say About It?
Let’s go back to the beginning.

In Genesis 3:11, after Adam and Eve sinned and tried to hide themselves, God asked:

“Who told you that you were naked?”

In other words: Who told you that you weren’t enough? That you didn’t belong? That you had to hide?

Imposter syndrome begins the moment we start listening to voices other than God’s about who we are and what we’re called to do.

But here’s the truth:
✨“You are fearfully and wonderfully made.”  Psalm 139:14
✨“You are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” Ephesians 2:10
✨“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you.”  John 15:16

If God chose, appointed, and prepared you, then who are you to doubt your seat at the table He built?

Actionable Steps to Break Free from Imposter Syndrome (by Faith)

1. Replace Lies with Truth
Every time a thought says, “I’m not qualified,” respond with Scripture:
“God qualifies the called.” (2 Corinthians 3:5)

Write affirming scriptures on sticky notes. Speak them aloud in the morning. Let your mind be renewed.

2. Write a “God’s Résumé” List
Instead of listing your fears, list the things God has already brought you through.
Include:

  • Doors He opened
  • Strength He gave
  • Battles you’ve won in private

This list reminds you: You’ve already overcome with Him.

3. Stop Over-Explaining. Start Owning.
You don’t have to downplay your success to make others comfortable. Steward your excellence with humility – but own it with confidence.

Remember: Jesus never apologized for His authority. He simply knew who sent Him.

4. Surround Yourself with Kingdom Voices
If your circle reinforces doubt, it’s time for a shift. Get in environments where faith is spoken, leadership is honored, and God’s truth is the standard.

You weren’t meant to grow in isolation. You were meant to rise in community.

5. Pray Boldly and Ask for God’s Perspective
Daily ask, “God, how do You see me?”

Let the Holy Spirit correct the labels the world – or even your own inner critic – has placed on you. Prayer isn’t just a tool for comfort; it’s where identity is revealed.

Final Encouragement
Imposter syndrome may speak loudly – but God speaks louder.
And His Word says you are called, chosen, capable, and covered.

So the next time you feel unworthy, pause and ask,
“Who told me that?”

And then let God remind you who you are.
